Unable to obtain a license

After Effects 'Unable to obtain a license' — Fix Creative Cloud Conflicts

That licensing error is almost always a stale Creative Cloud token or a broken Adobe service. Here's how to clear it fast, ranked by what actually works.

You open After Effects, and instead of your project you get a modal that says Unable to obtain a license. Annoying, but it's also one of the most fixable Adobe errors out there. Nine times out of ten it's a licensing conflict between After Effects and the Creative Cloud desktop app — usually a stale auth token or a daemon that stopped talking to Adobe's servers.

Before you start, sign out of Creative Cloud entirely (not just After Effects) and sign back in. Seriously. That clears the error in maybe 40% of cases. If it doesn't, work through the causes below in order. Don't jump to reinstalling the whole suite — that's the nuclear option, and it rarely helps.

Cause 1: Stale Creative Cloud auth token (most common)

The Creative Cloud app caches your license token locally. If your machine sleeps for a week, or you changed your Adobe password, or IT rotated something in your Adobe Admin Console, that token goes bad. After Effects then asks Creative Cloud for a valid license, gets a garbage answer back, and throws the error.

Real trigger I see constantly: marketing teams on shared Adobe licenses, someone changes the password on the admin account, and every workstation starts screaming within an hour. Or a laptop that's been off for two weeks hits the office Wi-Fi and After Effects can't refresh.

The fix:

  1. Quit After Effects and Premiere completely. Not minimize — quit.
  2. Open Creative Cloud desktop. Click your profile icon (top right) and hit Sign out.
  3. Restart the machine. Yes, really. Adobe's licensing daemons hold file locks you can't clear otherwise.
  4. Open Creative Cloud, sign in, wait for the sync spinner to finish (don't skip this).
  5. Launch After Effects.

If you want to force the token rebuild without a reboot, kill these processes from Task Manager and relaunch CC:

taskkill /F /IM CCXProcess.exe
taskkill /F /IM CCApp.exe
taskkill /F /IM AdobeIPCBroker.exe
taskkill /F /IM node.exe

On macOS:

sudo killall -9 "Creative Cloud" "CCXProcess" "AdobeIPCBroker" "Creative Cloud Helper"

Note: killing node.exe is safe here — that's Adobe's local licensing service, not your dev environment. But if you actually run Node for work, expect to restart that too.

Cause 2: Adobe licensing daemon (FNP) can't reach Adobe's servers

Adobe's licensing uses a background service — on Windows it's Adobe Genuine Monitor Service and Adobe Licensing Service; on Mac it's AdobeGCClient and the FNP (File Network Protocol) daemon. If Windows Firewall, a corporate proxy, or endpoint protection blocks these, After Effects can't validate.

This one hits hard in enterprise networks. Palo Alto, Zscaler, and Sophos all love to block Adobe's license endpoints because they look like telemetry. Your sysadmin will say "we allow Adobe," then you check the proxy logs and find out they only allow *.adobe.com but not the actual licensing subdomains.

Check these hosts are reachable from the workstation:

ccmd.macromedia.com
ccmd.adobe.com
lm.licenses.adobe.com
lcs-cops.adobe.io
na1r.services.adobe.com

Quick test:

nslookup lm.licenses.adobe.com
test-netconnection lm.licenses.adobe.com -Port 443

If those fail, you've found it. Fix the proxy allowlist or firewall rule. Don't waste time on Adobe settings until the network path works.

Also check that the services are actually running:

Get-Service | Where-Object {$_.DisplayName -like "*Adobe*"}

Restart any stopped service. On Mac:

sudo launchctl list | grep -i adobe

Cause 3: Corrupted licensing cache (OPM.db / NGLLibrary)

When the token is fine and the network is fine but the error persists, the local license cache is usually trashed. Adobe stores this in a SQLite-ish database called OPM.db and a folder called NGLLibrary. Both survive sign-out, which is why "just sign out and back in" doesn't fix it.

Real scenario: someone force-shut down their machine mid-After-Effects-render, the DB got half-written, and every launch after that throws the license error. Windows Event Viewer will show nothing useful — Adobe's logging is terrible here.

Close everything Adobe, then nuke the cache:

Windows:

%ProgramData%\Adobe\AdobeGCClient\
%ProgramData%\Adobe\OOBE\
%AppData%\Adobe\OOBE\
%LocalAppData%\Adobe\OOBE\
%UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Adobe\OOBE\

macOS:

/Library/Application Support/Adobe/OOBE/
~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/OOBE/
/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.acc.installer.plist

Rename the OOBE folders to OOBE.old rather than deleting — you can roll back if something breaks. Reboot, sign into Creative Cloud again, launch After Effects. It'll rebuild everything from scratch.

If that still fails, run Adobe's Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool. It's the only Adobe utility I actually recommend. It removes licensing cruft the uninstaller leaves behind:

What about Adobe Genuine Service warnings?

Sometimes After Effects shows "Unable to obtain a license" and separately Adobe Genuine Service flags the install as non-genuine. That's a different problem — usually a volume license swap or a cracked trial leftover. If you bought the license legitimately and Genuine Service is still complaining, uninstall AGS and reinstall Creative Cloud fresh. Don't try to disable AGS with registry hacks; it'll come back with the next update.

Things that don't help (skip these)

  • Reinstalling After Effects only. The license lives outside the app. You'll waste 30 minutes.
  • Disabling your firewall entirely. Test it, sure. Don't leave it off.
  • Clearing browser cookies. Completely unrelated.
  • Running as admin. Doesn't touch the licensing daemon.
  • Calling Adobe support as your first move. They'll walk you through the same steps above, badly.
