Google Photos Backup Stuck? Fix Full Storage Now

I know it's maddening — you open Google Photos and see that little 'Backup paused. Storage full' message. Your vacation pics aren't uploading. You've tried restarting the app, your phone, even the Wi-Fi. None of that works. The real fix is simpler: you're out of Google storage.

The Fix: Free Up Google Storage

Google gives you 15GB free across Gmail, Drive, and Photos. Once you hit that limit, backups stop. Here's how to clear space right now.

Step 1: See what's eating your storage

1. Open Google Photos on your phone or computer.
2. Tap your profile picture in the top right.
3. Select Account Storage. You'll see a breakdown: 'Photos and videos', 'Gmail', 'Drive'.
4. Look at the bar. If Photos is taking most of it, we'll clean there first.

Step 2: Delete low-quality backups

Google Photos has a 'Storage saver' mode (used to be called 'High quality'). It saves photos at 16MP and videos at 1080p. Those still count toward your 15GB now. Here's how to find and delete the junk:

1. In Google Photos, tap Photos at the bottom.
2. Tap your profile picture → Trash → Empty Trash. This removes already deleted items instantly.
3. Go back to Photos. Tap Library → Recently added.
4. Look for blurry shots, screenshots, or video memes you don't need. Select them (tap and hold) and hit Delete.
5. Empty Trash again.

Step 3: Delete from Gmail and Drive

Big attachments in your inbox or old files in Drive waste space. On a computer:

• Go to Gmail. Search for has:attachment larger:10M. Delete old emails with huge files. Empty Trash in Gmail too.
• Go to Google Drive. Sort by 'Last modified' and delete files you don't need. Empty Trash in Drive.

After freeing about 500MB, go back to Google Photos. Swipe down to refresh. Backup should start within a minute.

Why This Works

Google's backup system checks your storage before uploading. If you're at the limit, it pauses — not because your phone is broken, but because there's no room. Clearing data from any Google service frees the same pool. Once you're under 15GB, the backup resumes automatically. No app reinstall needed.

I've seen this on Pixel phones, Samsung Galaxy S23, and iPhones. It's the same fix across all. Don't waste time with app cache clearing or airplane mode toggles — they don't touch the real problem.

Less Common Variations

You have lots of free space but backup still pauses

Sometimes the cache in the Google Photos app gets corrupted. On Android: go to Settings → Apps → Google Photos → Storage & cache → Clear cache. On iPhone: offload the app (Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Google Photos → Offload App) and reinstall. Your photos are safe; they're in the cloud.

Backup stuck after changing account

If you switched Google accounts, the new account might have zero storage. Go to Photos settings → Backup → Account and make sure it's the right one. Free storage on that account.

Your Google One subscription expired

If you paid for 100GB and it lapsed, you drop back to 15GB. You'll be over the limit instantly. Renew the subscription in Google One, or delete enough data to fit in the free tier.

How to Stop This from Happening Again

• Turn on Storage saver: In Photos settings → Backup → Upload size, choose 'Storage saver' instead of 'Original'. It compresses photos but keeps them good enough for social media.
• Set a monthly reminder: Pick a day (like the 1st) to check your storage at one.google.com/storage. Delete junk before you hit the wall.
• Buy Google One if you need it: 100GB costs $1.99/month. If you take lots of video, it's worth it. I've had it for 2 years and never hit the limit.
• Export and delete old photos: Once a year, download your photos to an external drive, then remove them from Google Photos. Keeps your cloud clean.

That's it. Your backup should be running now. If it's still stuck after 5 minutes, restart the Google Photos app one more time. Otherwise, you're good. Go enjoy your photos.
