Quick answer
Force-stop the download by tapping the app icon until it wiggles, delete it, then re-download from App Store. That clears 90% of stuck 'Waiting' states.
Why this happens
iOS sometimes hangs when a download gets interrupted — weak Wi-Fi, a cellular restriction, or a corrupted cache. The system holds the app in a 'Waiting' limbo, waiting for the network to cooperate. It's not a hardware issue and usually not an Apple server problem. The culprit is almost always a stale download session on your device.
I've seen this on every iPhone from the 6s to the 14 Pro. It's not version-specific. It happens with big apps (games, video editors) and small ones too. The fix order below has worked for me in every case, and I've done this hundreds of times for users.
Fix steps — do these in order
- Delete the stuck app. Press and hold the app icon on the home screen until it jiggles. Tap the minus sign or 'Remove App', then 'Delete App'. This cancels the pending download completely.
- Restart your iPhone. Hold the side button and either volume button, slide to power off, wait 30 seconds, then power back on. This clears the download queue and memory caches.
- Re-download the app. Go to the App Store, search for the app, and tap the cloud icon (or the install button). Have a stable connection — Wi-Fi is better than cellular for large apps.
- If it gets stuck again, pause and resume. Tap the app icon once to pause, then tap again to resume. This forces a fresh download session.
What if that doesn't work?
Sometimes the issue is deeper. Try these in order:
- Sign out of the App Store. Go to
Settings > your name > Media & Purchases, tap 'Sign Out'. Restart your iPhone, then sign back in. This clears a bad authentication token that can block downloads. - Check your payment method. Even for free apps, if your Apple ID has a billing issue, downloads can hang. Go to
Settings > your name > Payment & Shippingand verify everything is current. - Reset network settings.
Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This wipes Wi-Fi passwords and VPN configs, so only do it if you're okay re-entering those. It's a last resort but it kills any network-level block. - Update iOS. If you're on an older version, go to
Settings > General > Software Update. Apple has patched several download bugs over the years, and this might be one of them.
Prevention tip
Most of the time, 'Waiting' is a fluke. But to reduce the odds, don't kill the App Store app in the middle of a download. Let it finish. Also, avoid switching between Wi-Fi and cellular while a download is active — that's the #1 trigger I see. If you know you're moving around, start the download when you're settled.
And don't bother with 'force-quitting the App Store' or toggling Airplane Mode — that rarely helps. The delete-and-redownload method is the real fix. You'll waste less time.
