You've followed the instructions. You've fully charged, then fully drained the battery. But the battery still shows wrong percentages or dies at 20%. I've seen this with Dell, HP, Lenovo, and ASUS laptops. The real fix isn't complicated, but you need to do it in a specific order.

Step 1: Check your battery health first

Before you waste time calibrating a dead battery, check its actual health. On Windows 10 or 11, open Command Prompt as administrator. Type:

powercfg /batteryreport

After you press Enter, you'll see a message saying the report was saved to C:\Users\[YourName]\battery-report.html. Open that file in any browser. Look for two things:

  • Design capacity - what the battery was designed to hold
  • Full charge capacity - what it can actually hold now

If full charge capacity is below 80% of design capacity, calibration won't help. You need a new battery. Stop here and buy a replacement.

Step 2: The actual calibration sequence
