Your laptop shows the Dell, HP, or Lenovo logo and then sits there. This guide walks you through the real fix, step by step.

When This Happens

You press the power button on your laptop. The screen lights up with the manufacturer logo – could be Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, or Acer. Then nothing. The logo stays there. The spinning dots might stop. The fan might be loud. You wait one minute, five minutes, ten minutes. Same screen. You force shut down and try again. Still stuck on that logo. This usually happens after a power failure, a driver update that went wrong, or after you bumped the laptop.

Why It Gets Stuck

The logo screen is the POST (Power-On Self-Test) stage. The laptop checks its hardware before loading Windows. If something fails here – bad RAM, loose RAM, a dead CMOS battery, or a corrupted BIOS setting – the laptop can't move past the logo. The real cause is almost always memory-related in my experience. I've fixed dozens of these. Nine times out of ten it's the RAM sticks not seated right. But let's go through the fix steps in order.

The Fix Steps

Step 1: Do a Hard Reset

This clears residual power from the motherboard. It fixes about 30% of logo hangs.

  1. Unplug the power cord from the laptop. Yes, pull it out.
  2. If the battery is removable, slide the latch and take it out. If it's internal (like most modern thin laptops), skip this for now.
  3. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Count to 30. You'll see the screen flash maybe once. That's normal.
  4. Plug the power cord back in (do not put the battery back yet).
  5. Press the power button to turn it on.
  6. After doing this you should see the logo for maybe 2 seconds, then the screen goes black, then Windows starts loading. If you see the spinning circles, you're good.

Step 2: Reseat the RAM

This is the most common fix. RAM sticks can shift even if you didn't drop the laptop – thermal expansion loosens them over time. Here's how to do it.

  1. Turn the laptop off and unplug it. Remove the battery if you can.
  2. Get a small Phillips head screwdriver. You'll need it to open the bottom panel.
  3. Flip the laptop over. Look for a panel held by a few screws – usually marked with a RAM icon or just a rectangle. Some laptops have one big panel, some have a small dedicated RAM door.
  4. Unscrew the panel screws. Keep them in a cup so you don't lose them.
  5. Once the panel is off, you'll see the RAM sticks. They look like green or black sticks with gold pins. There might be one or two.
  6. Push apart the metal clips on both sides of the RAM stick. The stick will pop up at a 45-degree angle.
  7. Pull the stick out gently. Set it on a clean, dry surface.
  8. Wait 10 seconds. Then slide the RAM stick back into the slot at the same 45-degree angle. Push down firmly until the clips click back into place. You'll hear a snap when it's locked.
  9. If you have two sticks, do the same for the second one.
  10. Put the panel back on. Screw it tight.
  11. Put the battery back in and plug in the power.
  12. Turn on the laptop. After this step, the logo should flash quickly and Windows should start. If it still hangs, move to the next step.

Step 3: Clear the CMOS

The CMOS battery stores BIOS settings. Clearing it resets everything to default. This fixes corrupted settings that cause a boot hang.

  1. With the laptop off and unplugged, remove the bottom panel again (if you already did).
  2. Look for a small silver coin cell battery on the motherboard. It's the size of a nickel or a quarter. Might be under a ribbon cable.
  3. Using a plastic spudger or your fingernail, gently pry the battery out of its socket. Do not use a metal screwdriver – you can short something.
  4. Wait 60 seconds. Press the power button once to discharge any leftover power.
  5. Put the CMOS battery back in. Make sure the positive side (marked +) faces up.
  6. Reassemble the laptop. Turn it on.
  7. You should now see a message like "Press F1 to enter setup" or "CMOS checksum error" – that's normal. Press F1 or Enter to continue. The laptop should boot into Windows.

Step 4: Try One RAM Stick at a Time

If you have two RAM sticks, one might be dead. Testing them one by one finds the bad one.

  1. Open the RAM panel again.
  2. Remove both sticks completely.
  3. Insert only the first stick into the slot closest to the CPU. Close the panel (or leave it open but careful).
  4. Turn on the laptop. If it boots past the logo, that stick is good.
  5. Shut down, swap that stick for the second one. Put it in the same slot.
  6. Turn on again. If it boots, both sticks are fine. If the second stick hangs the laptop, that stick is bad. Replace it.

Step 5: Boot Without Hard Drive

Rare, but a failing hard drive can hang the logo screen if the BIOS tries to read from it during POST.

  1. Unplug the laptop, remove the battery.
  2. Open the bottom panel. Find the hard drive – it's a 2.5-inch rectangle connected by a SATA cable or ribbon. For SSDs, it's a small card sometimes.
  3. Disconnect the hard drive by gently pulling the cable connector straight out. Do not yank.
  4. Turn on the laptop without the hard drive. It might show "No boot device" error – that's fine. The point is whether it gets past the logo. If it does, you know the drive or its cable is the problem.
  5. Shut down, reconnect the drive, and test again.

If It Still Fails

If none of these steps work, the problem is deeper. Probably a dead motherboard or a fried CPU. At this point, you have two options. First, try a BIOS recovery – look up your laptop model's manual. Most modern laptops have a key combination (like Ctrl+Esc or Fn+R) that boots from a USB recovery file. Second, take it to a repair shop. They can test the motherboard with a multimeter. But honestly, if you've done all these steps and it still hangs, the motherboard is likely toast. Time to back up your data and look for a replacement laptop.
