This error is real. Here's how to stop it.
I've seen three clients this year alone with Samsung 990 Pro SSDs reporting 10-20% health loss in just a few months. One guy was panicking because his drive went from 100% to 78% in six weeks. The fix isn't replacing the drive. It's a firmware update straight from Samsung. Here's the deal.
Step one: check your current firmware
Open Samsung Magician, the official tool. Look at the firmware version under the drive details. If it's anything older than version 5B2QGXA7, you're on the bugged version. The big culprit was 5B2QGXA7 and earlier. Samsung released fix firmware 5B2QGXA7 and then 5B2QGXA8 later.
Step two: update the firmware
- Download Samsung Magician if you don't have it. It's free from Samsung's site.
- Open Magician, select your 990 Pro drive.
- Click on 'Firmware Update' in the left sidebar.
- If an update shows up, click 'Update' and let it run. Don't touch the PC during this. It takes about 2-3 minutes.
- After it finishes, reboot the PC.
If Magician says 'no update available' but you're still on an old firmware, Samsung has a standalone ISO boot tool. Go to Samsung's support site, search for 'Samsung SSD 990 Pro firmware ISO', download it, burn it to a USB with Rufus, boot from that USB, and follow the on-screen prompts. This is the nuclear option but works when Magician fails.
Why this happens
The 990 Pro has a bug where the drive's internal health reporting algorithm goes haywire. Instead of reporting real NAND wear, it reads from a corrupted internal log. The drive isn't actually dying—it's just lying to you about its health. The firmware update fixes the algorithm. After the update, you'll see health jump back up or at least stop dropping. One client saw his health stop at 82% and hasn't moved in four months. It's not a hardware failure—it's a software bug.
Less common variations
Sometimes the health drop is combined with the drive going into 'read-only' mode. That's a different beast. If your 990 Pro becomes read-only, it means the drive's controller detected a real issue—like a bad block or a power loss event. The fix there is to back up everything immediately and get a replacement under warranty. The health drop alone? That's the firmware bug.
Another weird one: the drive shows 100% health in Windows but Magician reports 60%. I've seen this on systems with multiple Samsung drives. The fix is the same—update firmware on all Samsung drives connected. Even if one drive is healthy, update it. The bug can cross-contaminate reports.
Prevention going forward
Check for firmware updates every six months. Set a reminder on your phone. I do it in January and July. Also, keep Samsung Magician installed and let it run a quick check every month. It's lightweight and catches these things early.
One more thing: avoid using third-party tools like CrystalDiskInfo for Samsung SSD health. They read the same buggy data. Stick to Magician after the firmware update. I had a client who kept checking health with CrystalDiskInfo and panicked because it showed 50% health after the firmware fix. Magician showed 90%. Trust Samsung's own tool after the update.
If you're still seeing health drops after the firmware update, run a full diagnostic scan in Magician. If it passes, the drive is fine. If it fails, RMA it. Samsung has good warranty support for the 990 Pro—usually 5 years. Don't sit on a bad drive. I've done three RMAs this year, and all were replaced within two weeks.
